Can you search a Vanilla community from a 3rd party KB tool (i.e Zendesk)?

You problem is the you have two APIs that are used to pull data from, but you have to put the code somewhere that does the actual pulling. You need somewhere to host the code. We don't do general hosting. I'm not sure if Zendesk does.

So if someone was using a 3rd party KB and wanted a federated search they'd like have to maintain/host some centralized page that makes calls to both Zendesk & Vanilla content and display it there.
There would not be a way to display Vanilla forum content in a Zendesk search result, correct?

Yes, to the first paragraph. I can't speak to Zendesk.... if they allow you to put in custom code, then yes it could be done. I doubt it though.

All the implementations I've seen it was another page, like Promethean, Acer or Qualtrics. I am not sure Zendesk can bring in our API, but they seem to have a plugin for Algolia which may work. They would crawl Vanilla and bring the info in.
This is 100% conjecture, BTW, not an endorsement.

Personally, I'm really interested in Coveo. We have customers already using it and it has dedicated integrations with our competitors. Lithium, Jive, and Salesforce.
Other cool platforms on the list: Zendesk, Oracle KB, Dropbox, Drive, Yammer, Jira, Confluence
This can technically support Vanilla already through the Generic Search API
