Closing Discussions & related permissions
In speaking with Automic's Jenn and Kerry while they were at the office on Friday, Jenn had raised a question. She had a user role that had the ability to close discussions in a few categories. She wondered why someone could add to comments to a closed discussion.
I explained that the permission to close discussions would be seen as having permission to ignore that limitation, since they're the ones who could enact it in the first place. (At least that's my logic for it.)
She hadn't realized that the close discussions permission in the role permissions for categories would allow someone to close ALL discussions in that category, so I let her know that was the case.
So her question is -- can users close their own post? I explained that, to the best of my knowledge, no, but that I would pass that along as some feedback.
Given that we'll be revisiting moderation tools, it might be a nice touch to allow users to close their own posts? I'm not sure how anyone else feels about that, though. I can see that it could be disruptive if the OP doesn't like the direction in which the conversation is heading.
Just wanted to share,

I've never been a fan of users self-closing. It implies a level of ownership to discussions you start, which typically isn't how a forum works. And this inevitably is not something everyone could agree on the other way, which means we'd be adding yet another config setting. I'd rather stick with "no".

It's a fair point, given how I now realize users aren't allowed to delete their own discussions. Still, I said I'd pass along the feedback!
Thanks for the explanation, I appreciate it.0 -
Sure thing, I never mind explaining a product choice. If I can't defend it after all these years then maybe it shouldn't be that way.
