Thanks for your note and sorry for taking so long to respond. There were a few reasons we decided to go away from Vanilla Forums and to Xenforo, one main thing on that is that we found that it was much easier for non-geeks to make changes through on Xenforo without relying on our technical team to do the changes directly. This for both add-ons and design changes on the forums itself that is design related for instance.
We also found that managing moderators and different set of user groups was much easier in Xenforo compared to Vanilla Forums.
We also found that it was easier to manage COPPA with Xenforo.
It came down to preference and previous experience with forum software, although Xenforo was new to us, it is very similar to vBulletin which many of us had used in a professional manner before. Ultimately we did find that Xenforo was easier for us to manage without requiring to use our expensive tech crew.
That´s the kind of high-level overview of why we decided to move away from Vanilla Forums, although there are obviously many small details and reasonings for why we decided to do the switch. We reviewed quite a lot of forum software before we changed and we was not "sold" the software in any way.
We are not looking to change software for our community at the moment.
