Following addon is broken - can it be resurrected?

I've been asked a couple of times about the ability to follow other users within the community. Sometimes it's just gaming forums so they can find their friends content or other times OpenText wanted users to have this ability to find product experts and have a way to find their content.

I noticed we had this plugin https://github.com/vanilla/internal/tree/master/plugins/Following but it seems to create a lot of errors when I turned it on my demo site and tried to use it. Perhaps it just needs to be looked at and re-factored slightly.

If we could get it to work so that at a minimum users could have a list of other followed users accessible from their profile then I think that would be a win. If other people have ideas on how this sort of idea of following users could be improved please share them.

    I'm bumping this since I think dusting off the roles plugin would be a good enough idea. If it's just the ability to list users in your profile so that you can have an easy access to their profile and thus their posts I think that would be good enough.
