Things that live in /plugins that could live in /addons

I think that the CSMs spend a fair amount of time enabling addons that are kinda kept behind a curtain in /plugins that could perhaps be accessible out of the box in /addons

  • swagger
  • avatar pool
  • badgify comments
  • gravatar
  • keyword blocker
  • Link Types
  • Ignore

@ValR @BrendanParm @BrigitteP anything I missed?

Comments

  • The place where the actual separation lives is in a plugin written by the ops team so @evach @Tim

  • I think this is more Product's bailiwick than Ops. R&D has Write permission on that repo for a reason.

  • Link Types.

  • I never see Gravatar used anymore? I thought it was deprecated. Also, doesn't Avatar Pool turn off some other functionality related to Avatars?

Gravatar and Vanillicon should be rolled into the "Avatars" control page as core features rather than added to that whitelist, IMO.

Link Types needs a better name. Possibly it should just be a core option.

Ignore I don't think adheres to community best practices, so I didn't want to encourage folks enabling it. Open to talking more about it, just saying I don't regard it as an omission at the moment.

  • We should remove API v1 from Addons and keep v2 in Plugins as these are not available to Business plan clients,

  • Fun fact: the APIv2 plugin is just the documentation. The API is available whether or not the plugin is enabled (we use it ourselves in the application).

  • yeah....shhhh we sell it on the Corporate plan only despite that logic.

Is the tokens permission always there? I really hate that it's available but I have to tell people it isn't part of the business plan when selling.

  • @BrendanParm if it’s a common sales issue bring send it the product email. A very minor issue but wouldn’t be to hard to hide on lower level clients.

  • @BrendanParm APIs are pretty much useless without the documentation. They may function but you have to guess how to use them. The documentation certainly adds value.

  • We have public documentation: https://docs.vanillaforums.com/help/apiv2/.

We would need to limit the ability to generate an access token to make API calls outside the application.

  • @Rhys Every vanilla forums dashboard also has up to date API documentation built in if it's available for their plan level. It will be an exact match of the end-points on their site. The public ones @BrendanParm linked tend to lag behind slightly and may be different based on the addons enabled for the site.

  • Good to know. Thanks

  • This conversation recently came up again with the CSMs -- Sheena noted Pockets would be a great one to have on by default, and Kirstie mentioned the flair addon, which is also super popular.

Maybe @ValR already has reviewing this on her radar this year?

  • Zapier is currently hidden - bad way to get adoption if CSMs always have to turn it on and there's no plan restrictions for that feature.
