I thought it might be fun to share some books you're reading or read with others.
I'll start with a book i'm currently reading and really enjoying. I highly recommend it. https://www.amazon.ca/Unpersuadables-Adventures-Enemies-Science/dp/1468310100?keywords=unpersuadables&qid=1547132446&sr=8-1&ref=sr_1_1

@Ryan , I read both those books last year. They're great! NOS4A2 is getting a TV series later this year, so that should be pretty fun.
Currently Reading:
I'm about 2/3s of the way through this and it's a pretty wild story. Essentially, a bunch of intellectual types get scooped up during China's Cultural Revolution to work on a secret military project and while the rest of the world is focused on building a bigger atomic bomb, this secret project is working on a big communication array and trying to contact aliens. And hey, the aliens respond.
There's also a ton of heavy mathematical/astrophysics-y and philosophical stuff being discussed which can be hard to mentally digest sometimes, but is ultimately interesting.
This is the start of a trilogy, and even though I'm not done yet with this one, I think I'm going to stick through for the rest of the series.

Since my last post I've read...
Kinda slow and not super scary, but still interesting enough to keep me going through it. This book also ties pretty directly into the Dark Tower setting, which I love.
Super quick read. Just a bunch of short stories by Neil Gaiman. Super solid. He calls them 'fairy tales' in the prologue but I don't think they'd be stories I'd consider reading to children - a lot of them are kinda creepy.
One of my favorite books. I haven't read it in a few years and I wanted to get through it again before the next season of the TV show came out. It's still a great read and I definitely picked up on things that I hadn't in previous readings.
One of my housemates has been recommending this to me for ages, and I finally picked it up. SUPER different from the Studio Ghibli movie but not in a bad way. Fun fantasy, but nothing reality changing.
I hated this book. I hate read it to completion. The show on Netflix has all the ridiculous sci-fi tropes that the book has, but it's executed leagues better on TV.
I just finished this one while eating breakfast. It's a world made up by George RR Martin that he invited a bunch of authors to write short stories in. Essentially, an alien virus gets unleashed on Earth and turns a small percentage of people into either mutants or people with superpowers. It starts at the end of WW2 and reads as kind of an alternate history, hitting on a bunch of major historical points between 1950 and 1990 but tossing superheroes into the mix. Pretty fun. I'll probably get the next book in the series at some point.
JUST STARTED
A friend loaned me this book like a year ago, and I am just now getting to it because I'm the worst at following through with recommendations. I'm only a few pages in, so no opinions yet.

Just discovered this thread today...??
I'm more of a non-fiction reader, so @slafleche your OP was on point. Adding it to my list.
Here's something that I enjoyed, a bit thick/technical, and some of the conclusions become obvious, but especially interesting to see the evolutionary biologist's perspective on the history of human-kind.
Also, this is the guy who influenced Yuri Noah's Sapiens. This is another good read which actually contains some nice tie-ins with community and tries to explain how shared beliefs have led to the biggest shifts in human evolution. Yuri tackles human history from a philosophy and history background.
There's a copy here in the office if anyone wants to borrow it.

Anyone keep track of their books on Goodreads? They do a cool end-of-year data thing:
https://www.goodreads.com/user/year_in_books/2019/91508450
Also, I'm only one book away from my set goal of 32 books in a year, and I'm pretty sure I'll finish that this week. ?

Hadn't realized that American Gods was originally a book series. The TV show was pretty good, but I bet the books are way better. Have you seen the show?

I've seen the show and I really dig it. It hits a lot of the same beats but they're different enough. It's a great book - one of my favourites for sure.
