Thoughts / feedback on Dashlane

Hi folks,

We are negotiating our renewal with Dashlane right now. Part of that process involves scouting for alternatives, and also providing feedback to Dashlane themselves about how their product does and doesn't work for us.

Please spend a few minutes detailing your experiences with the tool, both positive and negative, being as specific as possible.

For example, if it fails in a specific way on a specific site, mention that. If it helps you do something that saves you a lot of time, mention that.

Thank you

Comments

  • I find it slows down my machine and it asks me if I want to save information that I'm entering as data in a record as a password.

  • My experience so far mirrors what @Thalie has just said

  • The tool got me locked out of salesloft a couple times as it tried to reenter an old password over and over again. It also doesn't seem to update information when requested.

It also saved my email as Email 1 instead of mel@vanilla and it enters it randomly breaking the form. I end up having to disable it throughout the day to get to the accounts I need to get into.

Also, I don't know why but it likes to embed itself in weird spots everywhere like the tool bar in this discussion...

  • And +1 what @Thalie and @SharonR says on performance issues. From 0 to 10, I would give it potato. 🥔

  • I really like it. It saves my passwords and loads them across sites. Especially handy that I don't need to put in my password every time I entry/vfspoof. Took a bit of time to figure it out, but it's been good.

  • I've gotten used to it and don't really mind it. I like it as much as 1Password.

It sometimes crashes and even if I force quit it and restart it I need to do a full reboot to get it working again.

  • Biggest Issues

    • It's browser autofilling/auto-saving is so obnoxious and inconsistent that I can't trust it. Too many times it said that it saved a password but didn't. So now I only use without a browser extension.
    • Every single time I open dashlane it now asks if I want to install the browser extension. I don't.
    • Dashlane is like a computer virus. It is impossible to quit while it is open. I have had it get stuck in an infinite loop of trying to install itself in safari, me refusing, quitting dashlane, and it automatically re-opening itself on top of what I'm doing to asset that it will install itself into safari. @D̸̨͝ą̸͂a̵͍̔z̴̙͋K̶̤̀u̷̢̇ can attest to this.
    • It's demoralized me to the point that I just let it keep safari for itself, and don't use safari otherwise.

    Minor nitpicks

    • Its fingerprint authentication doesn't work. It asks for my print, accepts it, then makes me put in my password anyways.
    • It's in browser CSS get everywhere!! See example posted above.
  • I already pretty religiously use last pass, so the two systems were in conflict. I ended up ditching the browser extensions for dashlane because the pop ups. Some process in it also started crashing overwatch so I nuked it from my personal computer with fire.

The auto login process has locked me out of sites, and I cant manage passwords in group/bulk like I can in LastPass. It was a big problem when I was getting happy fox set up, it saved some trash password and couldn't tell the difference between the portal and the backend. The auto log in would fire over and over until the security lock out in HF triggered.

It also created a lot of duplicates when I copied over my data for some reason, like five or six versions of the same site profile, So it would not stop giving me false warnings about everything.

If I had started with dashlane first, I probably would be fine with it overall, but the pop ups make me feel like I'm wrestling Norton antivirus on my moms computer in 2005.

The number of times I've watched someone at Vanilla sign into a place, especially when working on localhost or spoofing, and they sign in, and just instinctively dismiss the annoying popups that Dashlane throws up is quite high.

It's like watching my grandfather automatically click on the privilege escalation dialogues in windows XP without reading the message.

  • So how much is Dashlane paying you @farhan?

  • Dashlane would not fill in any webforms for me, forcing me to copy/paste passwords from their app into the form. That is an unacceptable UX.

Beyond that, I'm also not sure if their IOS app works properly either. With the latest IOS I can use One Password for pretty much any app or site password and access it from the keyboard. Dashlane does not seem to keep up with integrations.

  • Elon Musk bot forbids me from disclosing this information.

  • I have no problem with the passwords feature but the the note sharing feature sync is weak and you can overwrite things which is a big problem.

  • My only real complaint is that for whatever reason, it sometimes didn't recognize that there was a password field and therefore would not let me generate a password. The generate password pop up can be incessant at times.

Additionally, I've had issues with it actually saving my password for certain sites but that 'could' be user error. I noticed that sometimes the save password pop up appears but my email isn't automatically listed so then I have to go select it.

Don't blame yourself. This is the table-stakes feature of a password manager. Can it remember and save your passwords.

  • Uninstalling this dumpster fire made my heart sing.
