Could we support a Patreon integration in some fashion?

I didn't want to make this an idea because I think it's been tossed around before and while maybe it's cool, it's not really necessary for the Enterprise client's we want. I know @Linc mentioned to once that he would love for a client to request a Patreon integration so that we could build it but I don't think it would be a part of our R&D roadmap. Discourse already as an integration and Patreon promotes Discourse as a platform on their website.

What I am wondering if there are any hacks or ways this could potentially be placed in a forum so that forum could potentially receive donations. I recall reading in chat once that @Adrian suspected it might be able to go in a pocket and I would be curious how that might work. I am wondering if we can discuss a potential way a client could make use of Patreon in their Vanilla instance without any extra (or too much extra) custom integration. Or, figure out if it's not possible at all.

I know this is mostly why Shoryuken left. A media site like theirs that was seeing less and less traffic due to Discord & Reddit couldn't hang with a hosted solution unless members paid some of the share. It also got me thinking about Allhiphop who opted to join something called TheMaven and has essentially had the absolute worst migration to a new platform that I've ever witnessed. If you check it out here https://allhiphop.com/ic-thereason/ you can see a few posts from the past few months and this thing started in December. AHH was in a similar boat as Shoryuken.

While they really aren't our target market anymore, I do wonder if there's a rather simple way we could help them integrate with Patreon to potentially pass some of the hosting cost off to the fans that like their forums.

Does anyone have any ideas?

  • Patreon could be in a pocket, because in the essence it’s for a donation.

Honestly, though, it really depends on their needs.

Discourse built out a full sso with them https://github.com/discourse/discourse-patreon which they tied to rewards.

At the same time, I’m not sure people who rely on Patreon are really our target customers anymore, so while interesting as a project, it’s something I’d leave the open source users to make....

  • Yes as I said, these generally would not be our target customers. That said, I was curious if we could potentially figure out what putting it in a pocket for donations would mean in a practical sense. If we were able to figure it out once in this thread then we could re-use it with other clients. This could potentially save churn from these types of customers.

I guess I could try and figure it out but I am really not sure how about to do that and was wondering if any of the devs could lend a land. Basically I am wondering if this is an easier win than we realize or if it's actually too much work and not worth it.

  • @BrendanParm just go to their widget page, they'll give you the code back and that's it. There's nothing special to do here.
